Inner~Views: Guiding Students into Radical Prayer

Image
Prayer Leader interviewed Mike King, author or Presence-Centered Youth Ministry PL ~ Mike, your new book, Presence Center Youth Ministry, approaches youth ministry from a radical perspective - How is your approach different than the prevailing youth ministry culture? The approach I take is radical. The meaning of the word radical, comes from the Latin word (radix)meaning root. In this context, Presence Centered Ministry is radical because it goes to the root of biblical Orthodoxy and embraces Orthopraxy (biblical practice.) The gospels invite us and the youth we work with to “pick up our cross, deny ourselves and follow Jesus.” This is the kind of adventure that is compelling to passionate young people. I believe that program driven youth ministry that focuses on getting a kid to heaven when they die and concerns itself primarily with keeping our young people free from smoking, drinking, and premarital sex fails to represent the Great Good News of our Lord Jesus Ch...

Inner~Views: Encouraging Your Pastor

Image
Prayer Leader interviewed Bill Allison of Cadre Ministries PL ~ Bill, your website states "While Cadre Ministries will bring training to any size church, its special concern is the church with one pastor (and many volunteer leaders)." Why this particular emphasis? Larger churches have an inequitable voice in America because in America bigger means successful. You can question that all you want, but that's the way it is. While we don't have an ax to grind with bigger churches simply because they are larger, we want to champion what God is doing in the regular church. (I refuse to say "smaller" church--because it implies inferiority in our culture--and I don't believe they inferior at all.) Since our ministry focuses on helping churches train volunteers to do ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12), we LOVE the regular church because they already know that the key to effective ministry is training volunteers! Larger churches can hire staff. Good for them. But we hone...

Inner~Views: Insights to Guide Praying for Revival

Image
Dr. Bob Griffin Rockford Renewal Ministries *Bob, what prompted you to write Firestorms of Revival? I became overwhelmed by the conditions in our city and by the limited impact of Christian congregations to do much about it. In a prayer meeting in our City Council Chambers, I made an effort to pray after a speaker had shared how bad things were in our city and those of America. I began to weep and couldn't continue praying. It was after this that God, in a rather dramatic way, called us to begin Rockford Renewal Ministries. Being mid-way in my doctoral studies, I felt compelled to write on revival so I could learn how it comes--what we must do and what God does. My study gave me what I wanted to know. My passion for prayer and revival continued to grow as I served our city full time with a vision for a sweeping revival of the Church and another Great Awakening. After graduation I set a goal to one day write about revival from my reseach and personal experience as a "city re...

Inner~Views: 700 Prayer Quilts Spread Love and Prayer

Image
Prayer Leader interviewed Peggy Pearson, a member at Inland Hills Church in Chino Hills, California and leads the Prayers & Squares Ministry as a volunteer. Prayer Leader ~ Peggy, what is a prayer quilt and how are you using them to mobilize prayer for persons in your church? I’ve attached the blurb that goes on the back of each quilt request ===>Click headline to access that information . . . Prayer Leader ~ How did this ministry begin? What was the inspiration the Holy Spirit used to launch the idea? A few ladies started an informal quilting group in 1992 at Hope United Methodist Church in Ranch Bernardo, California, with no other purpose than to have fun making quilts together. Then, a group member's 2-year-old grandson ended up in a coma following heart surgery. His doctors were very pessimistic about Kody's chances for recovery. The ladies decided to make a quilt in vivid primary colors. There was no time to quilt it, so it was tied with perle cotton thread as si...

Inner~Views: Developing A Prayer Culture

Image
Prayer Leader Interviewed Steve Loopstra on a “Developing a Culture of Prayer” PL ~ Steve, you recently led a workshop on "Developing a Culture of Prayer" ... Why are prayer leaders beginning to think about the need to develop a culture of prayer? I’m finding a genuine interest in the concept of a “culture of prayer” because it challenges us to look at prayer from a whole different perspective than we are used to. And I think a more Biblical view as well. Rather than seeing prayer as another “program” to run in the church, looking at prayer as a culture, takes us to a whole new way of looking at prayer, and how it is or is not a part of our church lifestyle. PL ~ Help us get our arms around this new concept - Define and describe "culture" ... Culture, simply defined, is the sum total of the lifestyles of a particular group of people. It involves not only our actions, but those unspoken ways that we communicate and interact with one anothe...

Inner~Views: Pastor writes Pray BIG

Image
Prayer Leader interviewed Will Davis Jr., author of Pray Big: The Power of Pinpoint Prayers Prayer Leader ~ "Pray Big" is an engaging title for a book but it is much more than a hook - What are you telling the reader with this title? I want to encourage readers not to under-ask in prayer. There is no place in the Bible where God rebukes someone for asking too much of him. God’s promises for prayer are massive and limitless. Our prayers need to be the same. We need to ask for the most that God can handle, not the most that can handle . Prayer Leader ~ Pastor, what circumstances did the Lord use to reveal our need to pinpoint our praying? Actually, the idea for Pray Big was born in a prayer meeting, or after it. We prayed for nearly two hours. When we were finished, I couldn’t think of a single thing that we had asked for that would require a miracle from God. We’d done lots of “God be with Bill” and “God bless Sue” kind of praying. I felt the Holy Spirit a...

NPPN Interviewed Eddie Smith, President of the US Prayer Center and Co-Author of "Strategic Prayer: Applying the Power of Targeted Prayer" NPPN ~ Eddie, you have published dozens of books on prayer that are blessings to the Body of Christ. Why another one? Why this one? First, thank you for the interview, Phil. Frankly, this book is a concept that my coauthor Michael L. Hennen developed. He actually shared the idea with me several years ago. When my publisher asked me last year if I had an idea for my next book, I remembered what Michael had shown me and contacted him. We agreed to coauthor this remarkable book ===>Click headline to order the book . . . NPPN ~ You teamed with Michael L. Hennen on this book. How did this make "Strategic Prayer" a stronger work? Michael is in his early forties, I'm in my mid-sixties. My experience has mostly been in the U.S. Michael's experience has mostly been on the mission field, in some of the most dangerous places on ...

Inner~Views: Growing a Strong Prayer Ministry

Image
Prayer Leader interviewed Carolyn Fuqua, Prayer Ministry Coordinator @ Biltmore Baptist Church Prayer Leader ~ Carolyn, how long have you been Prayer Ministry Coordinator and what was the status of prayer when you stepped into that position? For several years I had worked with the Pastor as a volunteer with the Prayer Ministry then came on staff January 2001. The Prayer Ministry, at that time it was the God's 600, was strong when I came on staff. This was due to the fact that our Pastor had given great leadership to it, and people were excited to pray and watch God great things in our midst. We had watched as Biltmore moved from the depths of despair to getting a glimpse of glory as God worked and moved among our people. Our continuing goal is to recruit people to pray in small groups, as prayer partners over the telephone, or at home, using a Quarterly Prayer Guide. The Prayer Guide keeps us all focused on the same prayer prompts – the church objectives, ministries, missi...

Inner~Views: Secrets & Skills for Leading Prayer

Image
Prayer Leader Interviewed Lowell Snow author of Lowell, in your manual for leading prayer, you werite "the purpose of this book is to help others talk with God" ... Who did you have in mind? Every follower of Christ eventually leads prayer. My Prayer Guide book starts with the prayer basics that a soccer mom might need to lead a prayer on the sideline before the game and concludes with leading congregational prayer in the heart of a worship service. Between those extremes are chapters on many prayer leadership opportunities from leading a Bible study class prayer time to praying for someone who’s experienced a tragedy. I’ve asked many pastors if they had training in leading corporate prayer while earning their college and seminary degrees. Very few have. This lack of training has filtered down through the laity to the point that most churches don’t have anyone who’s proficient in this important skill. That’s why most group prayer is just an extension of monologue prayer, w...
